tutorial eight: embed a flickr badge

Tutorials four and five

Tutorials four and five involved making a video of a theme selected by our class group. Following this our group was required to edit the film and create special effects. We then created a you tube account and put the video onto youtube and then onto our blog.

Youtube is made up of millions of videos loaded onto the internet in a single location. It provides a visual stimulation and an oral way of learning. Lecturers use videos from Youtube to provide examples of what the teaching session is about. This is highly beneficial for online courses.

In order to create our film we used a storyboard to order the content that would be presented in the movie. We had a very limited time to complete our planning, filming and editing process. the storyboard enabled our group to stay on task and to complete the task promptly with the short amount time allocated to us in the tutorial. Each picture in the story board had a purpose within the movie and created the overall effect.

tutorial three

Tutorial three is all about creating our a blog using Blogger.com.

Services offered by Blogger:

Blogger.com is a free online forum to allow anyone an oppportunity to speak or record information for themselves or the whole world to access.

Blogger comments can be private or allow other people to make comments and as the author of you blog, you are able to delete any unwanted comments.

Controls allow you to decide who can read or write on your blog, so it can be useful for group work where a number of people can contribute.

Blogger profiles allow you to find people and blogs that you share a common interest.

Blogger has many design features such as templates, customised colours and fonts, drag and drop page elements so that you can move entries of interest around and post photographs.

Blog Hosts:
There are several Blog Hosts available, but not all of them are free. Many are designed for a specific purpose but some just for the general population. Just host.com is a professional blog host which users pay to utilise.

Tutorial Two

In tutorial two we looked at using cameras and their possible applications. We had the opportunity to try out different camera functions and talked about how we may apply this to OT practice.

1) “A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature.” Briefly discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology. What would you consider to be some of the pluses and minuses of digital camera technology holds in relation to more traditional film based cameras?
With digital cameras, it is important to have the images backed up onto a separate hard drive or discs as often something happens such as a computer crashing then all of the images stored on there may be lost and there is no way to get them back. However, with traditional film cameras, photos can also be lost due to fires or theft or simply misplacing them. These will not be able to be retrieved once lost.

Todays method of using digital images is a lot cheaper for printing as you are able to see what the image will be like prior to printing it, thus ensuring only appropriate images are printed. Film cameras can work out very expensive because the whole role has to be developed and it is hard to ensure the desired image has been captured.

Photos are no longer as treasured as they used to be as with digital images you can take as many as you like and simply delete what you dont want to keep.

Digital images allow photos to be easily shared via the internet or disc so they are much more easily accessable. They are also much easier to store as they take up no room.

2) List some of the ways that digital images can be stored, transferred and manipulated using other communications technology.
digital images can be stored on computer hard drives, external harddrives, CD rom, memory sticks, on the internet on sites such as flickr or on social networking sites to name a few.

3) Given the prevalence of image capturing devised, and thinking about the issues discussed in tutorial one, consider what sort of ethical issues arise with their use.

It is much harder to ensure consent for content to be published is given for digital images. images can be taken without permission more easily. if it is online, anyone can copy and paste it and edit it to make it look how they want it too.

4) Briefly discuss some of the ways that digital images could, or are, being used in occupational therapy practice (include references and links to any web sites, or blogs you might come across).
It is common to see occupational therapists take photos of environments that need to be modified because this captures exactly what they need to do and shows what they have to work with.
Often photos are used in pamphlets for patients that explain equipment or reccomendations etc.
Photos are also a useful visual tool to show clients specific steps in a task. this may include the best options for positioning or transfers, and even in daily planners and schedules.

5) Provide a brief summary of the services offered by Flickr.com
Flickr is a video and image hosting website and could possibly be considered an online community. You can store, organise and share photos with ease in practically no time at all.

6) Name one other photo storage website which offers a service similar to Flickr.com
Photo galaxy

7) Explain what the difference is between digital and optical zoom.
Optical zoom; works like a zoom lens on a film camera. As it is zoomed the lens changes focal length and magnification which means that image quality is high throughout the zoom range.
Digital zoom; crops the image to a smaller size which after it enlarges this cropped section to fill the frame. This means the quality decreases greatly.

Tutorial Seven

Assistive Technology encompasses a wide range of devices, services, strategies and practices that are conceived and applied to ameliorate problems faced by those who have disabilities ( Cook, A.M., & Hussey, S.M. 2000).
one piece of equipment found in the adaptive devices workshop was a talking photo album.
a talking photo album allows a person to put a message behind the photo they are looking at. it can be either from the person who the photo is of wanting to explain to others, or a friend or carer can add messages to help the individual to identify what things are in the pictures. it can be very helpful to assist in learning.

Tutorial Six: The Internet and Online Communities

The online community I will be investigating is - http://www.facebook.com/

Facebook is an online social networking website which anyone over the age of 13 with an active email account can access. People within this community can communiticate with eachother, list birthdays, invite others to events, upload photos and videos and inform others on what they have been doing.

Facebook provides opportunities for individuals to access information about their friends, upload photos, use games and applications. People contribute to the site by commenting on photos, status and leaving messages on a friends page. Face book provides a Chat accessory so you can talk to a friend like any other instant messaging site. This is as instant as talking to someone face to face.

People choose to contribute to this community as it is a form of communication. It is easy for someone to keep in touch with friends and family. A comment or message is instant and free, therefore sometimes cheaper to keep in touch via facebook. In the past people would write letters and call on the phone. However letters can take weeks to arrive and phonecalls can be very expensive.

Main topics talked about on face book:
The main topics that are talked about on face book are peoples well-being, general gossip and weekend activities. E.g. "Hey how have you been? i havnt seen you in so long, we really should catch up!!"

Ethical issues
Ethical issues need to be taken into consideration as often photos are uploaded without consent and anyone can access then, look at them, even copy them off the internet and edit them. Anybody can upload a photo and they can be viewed by any personthat is 'friends' and you are not able to take that picture down.

Benefits
There are many benefits to using Facebook.

-You are able to keep in touch with family and friends
-Look at photos of friends or family members to see what they have been doing
-Easy way to make conversation as it is much cheaper than calling overseas.
-Face book also enables users to join a range of groups. These groups maybe in relation to religion, culture, politics and can even be used as a way to raise awareness and fund raise.

What does face book lack?
-The ability for an individual to maintain privacy.
-Anybody has the ability to upload photos of any other individual and anyone can see it.
- It is very easy for the online community to be misused.
-People can put personal details about you on you page, this can be dangerous if the page is not secure and someone untrusted finds it. E.g. phone numbers

Tutorial One

In the first Participation in Occupation Lecture we covered Information Technology (IT) and Ethical Issues.

Information Technology is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as the study or use of systems such as computers and telecomunications for storing, retrieving and sending information. In the society in which i live, IT is common place. This form of technology is very prevalent.

Consider the definition of IT you have provided. How is this form of technology prevalent in our society? How common place has it become?

in todays society, technology such as computers and telecommunications are used daily by most people. Occupations are beginning to be based around these new technologies. these may be both meaningful and necessary.

What IT devices or systems do you feel comfortable and competent using?

I am comfortable using most technologies such as computers, cell phones, I-pods and other devices as i have grown up with these being part of every day life. (I am not as flash and up to date as a lot of people but i can do the basics)

Thinking about your own fieldwork experiences, consider how Technology is being used in Occupational Therapy (OT) practice?

New technology allows OT’s to communicate effectively with clients and other healthcare professionals they need to make contact with. A lot of settings now have clinical notes stored on computers rather in the traditional files. OT’s can incorporate the technology, such as computers and videogames, into a client’s intervention. This can allow the therapist to meet client needs through meaningful occupation.

What ethical implications arise from the capturing, sharing and transferring of information via IT devices (e.g. mobile phones) or systems (e.g. Internet).

•The digital divide- people who have access to IT devices and systems are more advantaged that those who do not.
•Social Justice and Safety- Private Information that is leaked onto
the Internet cannot be taken back. Informed consent.

Define Computer Ethics

Computer Ethics is a branch of practical philosophy which deals with how computing professionals should make decisions regarding professional and social conduct.

Define Intellectual Property

In law, Intellectual Technology (IP) is an umbrella term for various legal entitlements which attain to certain types of information, ideas, or other intangibles in their expressed form. The holder of this legal intitlement is generally entitled to exercise various exclusive rights in relation to the subject matter of the IP.

Define Social Justice

Social Injustice mostly refers to an ideal of society, where "Justice" refers to the economic status rather than the administration of laws. It is based on the idea of a society which gives individuals and groups fair treatment and a just share of the benefits of society, although what is "fair treatment" and a "just share" must remain unclear or subject to interpretation.

Wikipedia.(2010) Social justice.Retrieved March 9, 2010, from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/social_justice

Define Informed Consent

Informed consent is a legal condition whereby a person can be said to have given consent based upon an appreciation and understanding of the facts and implications of an action.

Wikipedia.(2010) Informed consent.Retrieved March 9, 2010, from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/informed_consent

In your own words briefly summarise why (or why not) a great understanding of ITC and the ethical issues it encompasses will help us in our practice and daily lives.

By having an understanding of ITC and the possible benfits and limitations it may bring to peoples everyday lives, we can learn to use it safely within practice as OT's, protecting ourselves and our clients, whilst improving the efficency of our practice and using technology as a tool for meaningful occupation.
